When a doctor should come before MemoFlow

MemoFlow is a dietary supplement labeled to support memory, focus and clarity. It is not a treatment for memory loss, dementia or any other condition, and it should never delay a medical check. See your doctor first in any of these situations:

  • Memory loss that is new or getting worse. Forgetting more often, asking the same questions again, getting lost in a familiar place or struggling with bills and everyday tasks are reasons to be seen. The National Institute on Aging explains which changes come with normal aging and which do not (NIA: memory problems, forgetfulness and aging).
  • Confusion. Confusion that builds over hours or days can come from an infection, dehydration, low blood sugar or a medicine, and it needs prompt care (MedlinePlus: confusion).
  • Sudden changes: call 911. Sudden trouble speaking or understanding, a drooping face, weakness or numbness on one side, sudden loss of balance or vision, or a sudden severe headache can mean a stroke. Call 911 at once and do not wait to see whether it passes (MedlinePlus: stroke).
  • Dementia screening. If you or your family have noticed lasting changes in memory or thinking, ask your doctor about a cognitive assessment. A doctor can run short memory tests and look for treatable causes, such as thyroid problems or low vitamin B12, before anything else (NIA: how memory problems are diagnosed; NIH ODS: vitamin B12).
  • Medicines that affect memory. Some sleep aids, allergy and bladder medicines, anxiety medicines and strong pain medicines can cause forgetfulness or confusion, especially in older adults. Bring every medicine and supplement you take, MemoFlow included, to your doctor or pharmacist, and never stop a prescription on your own (NIA: taking medicines safely as you age).

The label itself asks you to check with your doctor before use if you take medication or have a medical condition. Hawthorn may interact with heart drugs such as digoxin (NCCIH), Memorial Sloan Kettering advises people with diabetes not to use butcher’s broom (MSK), and gotu kola has rare reports of liver toxicity (MSK). If you have a side effect you think is linked to MemoFlow, stop using it, call your doctor, and you can report it to the FDA through MedWatch.

Memory that slips more than it used to, or keeps getting worse, deserves a visit to your own doctor before you try any supplement.
